Robot Eye Editing

Hello, writerly friends, and welcome to another installment of What's Up Wednesday.  WUW is a blog hop created by Jaimi Morrow and Erin Funk to keep writers connected and encouraged.  For more information, check this out.

What I'm Reading:  This week's read was UNDER THE NEVER SKY...
I gotta say, while I love a good dystopian, this one just felt a little too familiar to me.  There isn't enough that's different about it to grab me.

What I'm Writing:   Last week-

This week-
So, not the 5K I dreamed about, BUT I did A LOT of editing on my MG Sci-Fi UNDER THE BLUE, which I entered in Sun vs. Snow.

What Works for Me-  I thought of something!  When editing, I like to copy and paste a chapter at a time into www.hemingwayap.com.  That way robot eyes can check for passive voice, adverbs, and super long sentences. Just yesterday I learned about www.editminion.com, which is the same sort of thing but checks for even more stuff.

What else is going on:  I entered Sun Vs. Snow this week, so I have been editing HARDCORE.
This is my FACE after removing  70+ instances of the word FACE from my MS.  Look out JUST and APPARENTLY.  I'm coming for ya.

Hope you had a great week!

  1. Ha! We all have our crutch words, right? :-) Good luck with Sun vs. Snow. Yours is the second WUW post I've seen mention it today. Oh, and I read UNDER THE NEVER SKY right when it first came out, before dystopian fatigue set in, so I loved it. And I must say, I think the series gets better with each book, Maybe give the second (my personal favorite) a try. :-) Have a great week, Niki!

  2. I haven't eradicated my overused words from my MS yet, but I know they're in there somewhere.

I've had a real dystopian burn out lately. Having to take an extended break from them in the hope someone will create a really original one.

Have a great week! Best of luck with SunVsSnow.

  3. I'm sad to hear you didn't love UNDER THE NEVER SKY. Like Katy, I read it way back when it first came out, so I wasn't yet (mostly) over dystopian. Thanks a bunch for mentioning those two apps! I bookmarked them for later use. I know I'm a serial "just" overuser, so it will come in really handy for sure! Have a wonderful week, Niki! :D

  4. Editing, the bane of my existence. Well, when it's my own work. I don't mind critiquing others, or betareading, but for some reason I hate editing my own work. Glad to see you're making progress though! I'm sure JUST and APPARENTLY are already trembling in fear.

    My What's Up Wednesday post.
