A Blizzard of Books

Hello Friends!  It seems like it's been FOREVER since our last What's Up Wednesday, so let's do one now, mmmkay?  What's up Wednesday is a blog hop created by Jaimi Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers stay connected and share what we are working on.  To find out more go here.
What I'm Reading:  I have read a blizzard of books over winter break (see what I did there?) and quite a few four stars in a row (yay!)  My favorites were:

I LOVE a good historical fiction.  And if you can add ghosts and time travel and swoony boys you will always get my vote!  Plus I feel like I learned a little more about the French Revolution (because all my prior knowledge was based on Les Miserables).

So much love for this book!  I can't say I even remember the last time I read a collection of short stories, but I really enjoyed it.  Didn't hurt that this one contained some of the most badass YA authors around... can we say Laini Taylor?  Rainbow Rowell?  Ironically, when I think about this book, the story that sticks out to me the most was by an author I've never read before- Matt De La Pena.  Boy can write a romance, let me tell ya!
Then THIS happened... AHHH.  What a great ending to this series.  Seriously, everything tied up nicely and that thing that we need at the end of a dystopian series... a sea of hope.

I don't even think that was all the books I read since the last time I blogged, but those were the standouts.  Lots of time snuggled up with my babies, book in hand.

What I'm Writing:  A freakin' novel, that's what!  And it is coming along nicely.  I think my goal when I posted last was to add another 5K over the holidays.  So here was last time:

BOOM.  That just happened.  I honestly don't really know how it happened, but it happened.

What Works for Me:  Extra eyes.  I am always looking for people who are better writers than me to read my stuff and help a girl out.  It just helps to have someone you like tell you why it sucks before an agent or editor can.  LOL.  Just kidding, I kid.  But seriously... CP's are the bomb.

What Else is Going On:  I am not one of those parents who are all excited to shoving the kids back in school.  I had a blast over Christmas break, and it makes me really excited for SUMMER.  I really like my kids.  Oh, and I am lazy.
Look at these little cuties...

Who wouldn't want to spend her days with these guys?  Dang Kindergarten.  Dang preschool.  Sigh.  Well, we had a great Christmas, and are already off to a fabulous new year.  Cheers to you all!  Can't wait to catch up with you!

  1. I'm so glad you liked REVOLUTION! It's probably my all-time favourite YA read. I learned more about the French Revolution from it as well. It's actually sort of inspiring some aspects of my current WiP! Congrats on all the writing. That's super hard to do with the holidays and whatnot. I know I failed royally lol. Have a great week, Niki!

  2. Congratulations on getting so much writing done, hooray! :D

    Happy New Year ^_^

  3. I honestly think REVOLUTION is one of the best books YA has to offer. It's such a unique blend of elements that seem like they shouldn't go together, but Jennifer Donnelly meshed them all so well. Glad you enjoyed it!

You're seriously flying on your WIP! Hope the momentum keeps up in the new year! :)

  4. Congrats on all the words! Having extra eyes on your work is always helpful. Happy New Year! :)

  5. I loved Revolution and definitely want to reread it one day.
Great job on the writing! I definitely was not very productive over the holidays.
I was glad for my kids to be back in school mostly because they were playing a lot of Minecraft over the holidays! ;) But I miss lazy days.

  6. Your kiddos are darling! I was sad Monday when my girl went back to school, too. I missed her all day! Congrats on all your writing progress, Niki -- you're rocking your WiP!

  7. Oh no, you just added to my TBR list ... yeah, okay, it's a good problem to have. But that list is about to explode, I tell ya! I just went and checked out Shusterman's series and the first book is only $1.99 on Kindle. Of COURSE I couldn't pass that up! Love me a good dystopian. Your children are adorable. I would love to spend all day with that much cuteness, too! Have a great week!

  8. I need to confinue reading the Unwind series. I'm glad you enjoyed the ending.

  9. Your children are so cute. I was sad when my son went back in Monday too, miss him!
    Congratulations on all that writing!
I loved Revolution and I really enjoyed My True Love Gave to Me too, I think Laini Taylor's was my favourite.

  10. I meant to read MY TRUE LOVE GAVE TO ME in December, but I didn't get to it so next December it is :)

    Awesome on the word count!

  11. I got My True Love Gave to Me for Christmas (actually, I ordered it for myself and addressed it to my husband so he could wrap it for me) and LOVED it. Perfect holiday read!

  12. So glad you had a great Christmas! And it's good you actually like your kids. (will save them bocoodles on therapists later) ;)

And go you on cranking out the words!! That's wonderful!

Hope you have an amazing week!

  13. I loved My True Love Gave to Me! I'd never read anything by Michael De La Pena. I want to read one of his books now.
