Revis and Research Placement

What's Up Wednesday is a blog hop created by Jamie Morrow and Erin Funk to help writers stay connected and encouraged.  Click here to find out more!

What I'm Reading:  Um... this is embarrassing, but still A MILLION SUNS by Beth Revis.  Heavens, have I been reading this thing for like a month now?  In my defense, it is really long, and it is only just now getting interesting!  Ha!

What I'm Writing:

The Bootlegger's Letters:
I had some tricky scenes to write this week, as my MC is actually in the process of making her moonshine.   I had to keep double checking my research and solving all kinds of time-period problems, but I think I might have managed something plausible.   Incidentally, I totally know how to make booze now, so maybe we should have a party...
Goal for next week... Let's get this puppy to 30K.  Oh wait, is Christmas in there somewhere?  Well, that might not happen, but I like to aim high.

What Works for Me:
This is probably so dumb that all of you thought of it a million years ago, but I have started cutting and pasting the relevant research for the scene right into the "notes" part of the Scivener scene.  That way I don't have to flip back and forth between the "research" and the scene.  Plus I can never find anything in the research file anyway, and usually have to re-look it up, which wastes time, so this is a much better system for me.  Duh, right?

What Else is Going On:
Tonight I get to go out with some of my best girls and stuff our faces with cheese and chocolate at The Melting Pot!  I am pretty dang excited about it.  Hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

  1. Isn't crazy/hilarious the things you learn as a writer? I know how to do a self-defense move the Marines use that's called "the reap" all thanks to some research I did for my first WiP. Useful stuff lol. ;-)

  2. Oooh The Melting Pot! I love that place ^^ Enjoy!

Good luck with the writing. Have fun learning about the moonshine, too. Sounds very entertaining.

  3. Cheese and chocolate, yum, I want to come too.

Good luck meeting all your writing goals during this hectic season. Have a great week and a great holiday.

  4. Mmm, that sounds like fondue. We've made it our Christmas tradition to do fondue for Christmas Eve- we all look forward to it every year now, even the kids!

  5. I'm laughing over your comments about knowing how to make booze now. Our house is basically a craft brewery, seeing as that's my husband's latest hobby. Do you remember Mrs. Hannigan from Annie making gin in her bathtub? That's what immediately came to mind when you mentioned your character making moonshine lol.

That's a great idea about pasting your research into the notes section on Scrivener. I've started using the split screen feature a lot more so I can have the scene on one side and my notes/research on the other. Kind of the same idea. It takes a while to figure out a good system, doesn't it?

Merry Christmas to you too! :)

  6. I've been meaning to finish the ACROSS THE UNIVERSE series for forever. Maybe 2015 will be the year!

Have fun with cheese and chocolate :)

  7. I've heard good things about Scrivener, but haven't tried it yet. It sounds like it has a lot of useful features, and that notes section might make it easier than going back and forth among a bunch of different files.

  8. You know how to make booze now! Hellz yes on throwing a party!

And my WIP is set in the Victorian Era, so I get what you mean about having to keep all your research straight and make it seem somewhat plausible.

Hope you have a great Holiday! And good luck with your goals! :)

  9. Research can feel like it takes ages! It's fun but tedious, especially if you're doing it in the midst of writing.

And it's taken me months to read books this year so you're not the only one. My overall reading total is incredibly poor this year compared to previous years.
